This repo is for trying out things with purego.

So far, it works as expected in a GitHub Actions job in ubuntu-latest and macos-latest for libzip open and close. I need to get that working in windows-latest too. Also, I need to try some real JVM library functions (E.g. libzip inflate and deflate).

Purego does not support the same user-level APIs in every O/S. In fact, they require the user to employ https://pkg.go.dev/golang.org/x/sys/windows for opening a library in the Windows environment.

Note: Variadic library functions (variable number of arguments) are not supported.

On all platforms, successfully opened the JVM library and then the ZIP library.
Windows: What a royal pain in the hindquarters!

  • O/S differences (historical)
  • Java library subdirectory location (%JAVA_HOME%\bin on Windows vs ${JAVA_HOME}/lib on Posix)
  • Java library file ame prefixes ("" on Windows vs "lib" on Posix E.g. zip.dll vs libzip.so)

Executed the following libzip functions successfully on all platforms. Checked results with https://crc32.online/ :

  • ZIP_CRC32
  • Java_java_util_zip_CRC32_update

Note that these functions make no use of the JNI environment in the normal case.

Working on zip deflate and inflate. Success with deflaterInit. That is because this function makes no use of the JNI environment in the normal case.

Some observations of the libzip code:

  • The environment pointer is used for throwing exceptions. Maybe other uses? I haven't yet run into a function that uses the object pointer. Yet.
  • In general,
    - Very little comments (mostly, none) in the source code.
    - Symbol definitions are all over the place and, generally, without comments, of course. Pardon my sarcasm.
    - Parameters established during initialization of a z_stream structure seem to be required to be presented again (jint flush, jint params) even though the z_stream is also a parameter.
  • My assumption is that the jacobin Go code wrapper for natives will be fed all required parameter values on the stack and they must match up to the requested function's definition in our native table (TBD).
  • Extract from src/java.base/{unix,windows}/native/include/jni_md.h
    typedef int jint;                  // int64 assuming 64-bit architecture
  • Extract from src/java.base/share/native/include/jni.h:
    typedef unsigned char   jboolean;  // uint8
    typedef unsigned short  jchar;     // uint16

  • The JNI environment is required for several functions (E.g. Java_java_util_zip_Deflater_deflateBytesBytes) just to execute; a dummy pointer cannot be used. Each JNI environment belongs to a unique JVM thread.

100% in Go on Ubuntu and MacOS: Successfully created a JVM on the fly and got a handle for the JNI environment. AttachThread seems to be unnecessary. Windows failed unexplainably.

Lessons Learned

  • The JVM and JNI are intimately intertwined. I doubt if we can successfully use JNI functions without creating a JVM by calling JNI_CreateJavaVM.
  • Each thread that calls JNI functions must have its own JNI environment.
  • Trying to run a C program inside the same thread as the JVM seems to always lead to a crash.
  • We have gotten several JNI library functions to work. They need no real reference to an object and they do not use arrays or objects as parameters. E.g. CRC32 functions work perfectly when called from Go.
  • From Java's libzip, Java_java_util_zip_Deflater_deflateBytesBytes will not work without using the JNI environment utility functions. See essayer/C for C-language examples. That particular one doesn't crash although the resulting output length makes no sense. No help from chatGPT.
  • I believe that there are dozens of functions that have characteristics similar to Java_java_util_zip_Deflater_deflateBytesBytes (array parametrs, object parameters).
  • As far as I can see, Go cannot execute functions expressed as vectors in the JNI environment. So, we seem to be at an impass.
  • I am having trouble imagining a table-driven approach used by a JNI wrapper function called by the INVOKE* run.go opcode cases. Too many things can go sideways between the wrapper and the native library functions.

Tribute to the JVM JNI Testers

Given the complexity of the JVM / JNI code relationships, the way definitions are strewn all over the source code, and the consistent lack of comments, the fact that the JVM JNI functions have been working very well for a number of years is a tribute to those people who have spent significant time testing the JVM JNI relationships. Well done!
