We would like to have the ability to produce a binary without metrics overheads. Ideally, metrics could also be disabled at runtime with low overhead.

It's possible that using macros - similar to the log!() macro - would help address this when combined with conditional compilation.

See #313 where this is reflected in PR feedback.
