Stacks Data WG: Intro Thread

👋 Introduction:

Hey people! A few contributors have been taking some time to learn more about various data-related needs within the ecosystem. We've learned that as we approach the Nakamoto and sBTC upgrades, there is a clear need for more discoverable data related to the network and the token. This brief will further break down the definition of 'data' in this context and audiences we have identified as being in need of new data resources.

🎯 Objective & Scope:

• To research and scope the data needs of key audiences in the Stacks Ecosystem
• Ensure key data and data-related services needed to enable post-Nakamoto and sBTC adoption are in place

More about the data we're talking about and the people it may serve:

The data

• 🌐 Data on technical network health & status (blocks, nodes, etc.)
• 🤑 Data related to the token (TVL, flows, etc.)
• ❤️ Data about the community (growth, capital, etc.)

The key audiences that need data:

• 1️⃣ Data for STX purchasers, holders, funds, institutions
• 2️⃣ Data for Degens (DeFi related, signer dashboards, etc.)
• 3️⃣ Data for Developers (Data prospective builders look at, as well as tools/services they need to display data in their own apps)
• 4️⃣ Data for Core Developers and Technology Contributors (Additional network data like nodes health, etc.)
• 5️⃣ Data for Community (open-ended currently)

📦 Deliverables:

• A dashboard or similar tool through which important data is provided to the community and other key audiences
• Potentially API-based services for builders to leverage data through
• Likely: A partnership with a top-end provider, such as Dune, Nansen, Messari, Glassnode, etc.

📅 Timeline

We intend to deliver a complete scope on the various and diverse needs by the end of October. Implementation should be well underway sometime in November, and final deliverables available in early 2024.

Hey everyone, with several major data projects wrapped up and/or soon to ship, members of this Working Group have largely pivoted to other focus areas. To close this thread, I'd like to list a few accomplishments and results the WG drove:

• Onboarded Ortege through a contract with the Stacks Foundation. Ortege offers a robust data platform that includes a Studio ala Dune, as well as a robust Lakehouse, API, and AI features that developers can use.
• The Stacks Foundation partnered with Signal21 to bring a handy Stacks network dashboard online and produce regular reports.
• This partnership also supported Signal21 in onboarding ecosystem applications like ALEX, Velar, etc. as well as in building out their support for other Bitcoin layers, with the goal being to grow the visibility for all Bitcoin builders thereby supporting the growing narrative around Bitcoin L2s.
• Collaborated with Hiro to update the API pertaining to supply formatting so that exchanges, CMC, and others could readily access accurate data for these key properties
• Collaborated with Hiro to add Signer details to the Explorer ahead of the Nakamoto release and sBTC: https://explorer.hiro.so/signers
• Supported the development of https://www.stackspulse.com/ via Critical Bounty, with more development ahead
• Worked with long-time contributor and Signer, Degen Lab to create a Stacking Calendar. Not surprisingly, this is some of the most sought after data in the ecosystem. Thanks to their work it can now easily be synced to your calendar! https://calendar.stacking.tools/
• Collaborated closely with LunarCrush to enable social insights, API access for builders, and supported the team via creator campaigns during launch communications. https://lunarcrush.com/discover/$stx
• Thanks to the BD Working Group and others here, Chainlysis added Stacks support. This gives sBTC Signers a great compliance tool.
• Onboarded Token Terminal (basic integration, not pursuing a deeper one at this time due to cost/priorities):
• Originally grant supported, STXTools continues to make improvements and add support for Stacks apps!
• Produced several Messari reports and deepened the ongoing relationship there, look out ahead for Bitcoin ecosystem reports in 2025! https://messari.io/project/stacks
• Formed a close working relationship with https://www.bitcoinlayers.org/
• Supported Spartan Group with data requests and introductions as they compiled their Bitcoin Layers report: https://bitcoinlayersreport.com/

On the way:

• Return of 'Stacking.club' (kind of): The renowned builders behind Arkadiko are working on a Critical Bounty to bring us a user-friendly Stacking Tracker with individualized tools. • Signal21 is building a new miner dashboard under Critical Bounty: STX Mining Statistics Dashboard & How-To Documentation stacksgov/critical-bounties#21
