sBTC Meeting Minutes Thread

The sBTC working group will have weekly meeting notes posted here in minimal detail. We encourage anyone excited to participate to check out sBTC Getting Started GitHub Post.

sBTC Overview

sBTC is a new Bitcoin-based asset on the stacks blockchain that can be freely converted into and out of Bitcoin without relying on any trusted third party. It does this using smart contracts on the Stacks blockchain, which are secured by the Bitcoin network in a trustless manner.

sBTC is exciting because it will allow the millions of people who use Bitcoin to interact with apps that run on smart contracts without having to trust a third party to move their Bitcoin between different blockchains. This, paired with the Nakamoto release, will enable app developers to write robust and speedy apps designed for anyone who wants to stick with bitcoin.

Whether you're an app developer or a Bitcoin hodler, you should be excited about sBTC.

We discussed the following items:

• Getting ready for the bitcoin builders call on Oct 17th
• The benefits of using a GH project here and some ways we should use it differently
• sBTC code is in a good place and has a minor bug in testnet that we expect to be a minor fix
• @kenrogers has nearly finished an example developer app for the hackathon
• @janniks is nearly done with adding the api library capabilities to stacks.js
• @AshtonStephens is working on polishing devenv, publishing docker images, and creating the official sBTC 0.2 release before the hackathon

• We discussed being completely finished with Romeo EOW for the hackathon
• Discussed the following timelines for next week:
  • Monday, meeting to review the SIP together; everyone should read it
  • Tuesday follow up meeting to discuss and propose changes and refine
  • Wednesday - Thursday iterate and add engineering details.
• Currently need to absolutely finish and verity the sBTC TestNet deployment at asset contract ST3ACFZ2XKFPKAFD9YY92ZP0Y4QN6MTX3H20C27NY.asset

October 23rd - October 27th, 2023

The process of taking sBTC from an idea to a reality: the first thing we’re doing is reviewing and finalizing the SIP, and the second is creating and finalizing the design along with milestones and testing plans. This whole process is slated to be done by Nov 10th. In taking a critical look at sBTC we're looking at all the surrounding factors with a priority order of:

1. Security
2. Basic features
3. Promised extensions

This week we’re going through the sBTC draft SIP every day and then researching the things that need to be elaborated upon in the sBTC SIP so we can add them. Each research item can be found in the GH repo with a discussion with the research label here. All comments and conclusions can be found there (if sometimes in a link to another document).

For this week, I'd consider the discussions with the research label to be the notes of the meetings.
