Is it a bug?

  • I know this is an issue with the app, and contacting Mullvad support is not relevant.

I have checked if others have reported this already

  • I have checked the issue tracker to see if others have reported similar issues.

Current Behavior

Apps, Flatpaks in particular, take notably longer time to load when launched from the "Split tunneling" screen in Mullvad VPN app vs when launching the same app outside of Mullvad VPN app.

Expected Behavior

Apps, including Flatpaks, should not take longer time to load when launched from the "Split tunneling" screen in Mullvad VPN app for Linux. The launch time of the app should be comparable to the time it takes the same app to load when launched outside of Mullvad VPN app.

Steps to Reproduce

  1. Open Mullvad VPN in Linux
  2. Settings -> Split tunneling
  3. Click an app, installed as a Flatpak,to launch it
  4. Compare how long the app takes to load and compare vs when launching the same app outside of Mullvad VPN

Hi, thanks for reporting!

Do you have any numbers/benchmarks that you could provide? You say that flatpacks take an extra long time to launch, how big is the discrepancy? Holding out for your reply before we start investigating this ourselves 😊

Thanks for looking into this report.

Here's a quick test launching Flatseal (com.github.tchx84.Flatseal) in my trusted i7-7700K:

  • from Gnome, the app launched instantaneously without a perceivable delay
  • from Split tunneling screen, the app took 59 seconds to launch

Hope this helps. Let me know please if I can help with anything else. Cheers!
