Python extension not loading

Booting VSCode for the first time in a week or so and the python extension doesn't want to load. The notification indicates "Python extension loading" and after a while it also informs me that it's taking a while to load.

Python extension version: v2021.7.1060902895

moving back to a previous version (v2021.5.926500501) doesn't change anything. It doesn't appear to be causing high CPU usage but I've attached the CPU profile just in case.

What does the Output panel say for the Python extension?

Try to not launching VS Code from within a virtual environment; you should be one directory up from there.

At some point the virtual environment interpreter was set as the default path to interpreter. I can only assume something was up with my environment. Nuked the environment and rebuilt it and it is working fine.
