query! not checking for missing not null constraints?

I was expecting the query! macros to fail if a table has a not null constraint that would fail upon insertion, but it would seem it only cares about checking types on the included parameters. Is my understanding here correct, and if so, what's the rationale for not checking these insert constraints?
