After updating to the latest release and allowing anonymous connections to the MQTT broker (fine with my installation, not recommended in general) according to the documentation, the log revealed that no connections could me made.
It showed an error "Address not available" which finally led me to the issue eclipse-mosquitto/mosquitto#2040. Following the advice there, adding the line "listener 1883" and restarting the MQTT container solved the problem for me.
Since I'm by no means an expert, is this a viable workaround?
