Platform: Ubuntu 19.10, Also reproducible on Gentoo, Compton 0.1~beta2+20150922, Openbox 3.6.1, Kitty 0.14.3 (All ubuntu 19.10 latest)
GPU, drivers, and screen setup: Nvidia 1070 GTX, nvidia-drivers 435.21, tested on 1 x 1080p, 1 x 4k, and both monitors at the same time, all reproducable
Compton version: Compton 0.1~beta2+20150922 from Ubuntu repos
Compton configuration: compton -f -D 3 no other config
Steps of reproduction
Open a lot of kitty terminals (eg > 30).
Hold ctrl and scroll mouse wheel to move between virtual desktops
When navigating over the kitty flooded desktop compton takes much longer to transition, also to a lesser degree when navigating away from it. Problem seems worse when using many terminals on many vdesktops.
Expected behavior
Similar transition speeds to when all vdesktops are blank
Current Behavior & Other details
Transitions are very slow. Kitty is a graphically accelerated terminal which may cause some of the issue however I have a feeling other types of windows also cause similar problems.
Alternative to fix
I'd be happy if the response is 'go away and use another composite manager' - if that is the response, suggesting a good lightweight WM independent alternative would be appreciated!
